What is Canvassing?
RallyRight
Canvassing is the original form of political engagement. It means going door-to-door to speak with voters about a particular candidate or cause to try and win support.

Step Two
approaching a house
PARK
Avoid parking your car directly in a voter's driveway. Utilize neighborhood clubhouses, visitor parking, or street parking in front of the home.
APPROACH
Always access the home via the front door, and not through garages or side doors. If possible, utilize sidewalks to avoid walking through a voter's lawn.
KNOCK
Knock firmly on the front door. After knocking, take a few steps back away from the door to give your voter space
Tip: Confirm your're at the correct house by looking for the street address on the voter's home or mailbox!
Step Three
When Speaking to voters
IF THEY DON'T ANSWER
If the voter doesn't answer the door, select "not home" in the app. Leave literature at the door and move onto the next target house.
IF THEY DO ANSWER
Smile and intorduce yourself as well as the candidate or organization you are representing. Inform the voter that you are conducting a survey, and ask the first question.
Tip: If a voter doesn't answer, leave literature on the voter's door handle or tucked in the doorframe!
Step Four
When Speaking to voters
Survey the voter
If the voter is receptive, continue with the survey, reading each survey question and recording each survey answer, be sure to record answers while you are at the doorstep of the voter.
Answer questions
After you have finished your survey, thank the voter for their time. Politely answer questions that the voter may have about your candidate or organization, but refrain from extensive conversations - and move onto your next target house.
Tip: If you don't know how to answer a voter's question, direct them to your candidate or group's website!
Possible Solutions
When Speaking to voters
Uninterested voter
If a voter is uninterested, thank the vote for their time and ask if you may leave them a piece of literature. If they say no, submit to the appropriate answer on the app and proceed to the next target home
Angry voter
If a voter is angry, remain calm and friendly. NEVER argue. Instead, thank the voter for their time and leave.
Tip: Door knocking is NOT soliciting. Canvassing is protected by federal law.
Best Practices
When Speaking to voters
- Always be polite when interacting with voters
- Always leave your voter with literature
- Always try to know basic information about your candidate or organization
Tip: Never leave literature in a voter's mailbox - this is illegal
Staying Safe
When Speaking to voters
- Do not approach a house that you feel is unsafe
- If the house is unsafe, or inaccessible because of a gate, mark it as "inaccessible"
- NEVER enter a home or accept food/drink
Tip: your safety is the top priority- never put yourself in an unsafe situation!
